Bruce Bonds

Attorney in Champaign, IL

A Shareholder based out of the firm's Champaign office, Bruce Bonds concentrates his practice on Workers' Compensation, third-party defense of employers, and employment law. With extensive experience before the Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission, Bruce has defended employers in thousands of cases resulting in self-insureds, insurance carriers, and TPAs often seeking his expertise.

Bruce has spent his entire legal career at Heyl Royster and co-authored Illinois Workers' Compensation Law, 2010-2023, with Kevin Luther of the firm's Rockford office. Published by Thomson Reuters, the book provides a comprehensive, up-to-date assessment of Workers' Compensation law in Illinois. He served as a technical advisor to a combined employers' group, culminating in the 2005 revisions to the Illinois Workers' Compensation Act and with the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, Illinois legislators, and state agencies, resulting in the 2011 Amendments to the Illinois Workers' Compensation Act. In 2015, Bruce was appointed to the Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission's Rules Review and Revisions Committee. In 2022, Bruce was appointed to the new IWCL's Rules Review and Revisions Committee.

An Adjunct Law professor at the University of Illinois College of Law, Bruce has taught Workers' Compensation Law since 1998. He frequently speaks on Workers' Compensation issues at bar associations and industry-sponsored seminars. Bruce has served as Vice-Chair of the ABA Committee on Employment, Chair of the Illinois State Bar Association Section Council on Workers' Compensation, and currently on the Illinois Chamber of Commerce Workers' Compensation Committee.
